Tension

American Poetry Review, The,  May/Jun 2001  by Willis, Elizabeth

He's half a doc on graveyard, a boy scout in glasses. His dream's a modern desert shack, but he can't get there: his suit's filled with sand. His wife's shacked up with Malibu Charlie, a sucker sleeping through his own demise. The doc's not a saint, but his new girl might be. She makes him give up poker for a new life in pipe cleaners.

They want their own lousy law-abiding roll in the dirt.
