Catwalk, Flag Part, Tent Flap, Shoe Tongue

American Poetry Review, The,  Jul/Aug 2007  by Myers, Jack

Yesterday in class

I was explaining how

metaphor works

when I looked down

and saw my fly was wide open.

Why, I asked my students,

wouldn't one of you tell me

my fly was wide open?,

which was, of course,

when everyone noticed.

I said, "I did this on purpose,

to demonstrate the power

of the controlling metaphor."

And not zipping up I plunged deeper

into the abstraction of absent-mindedness

by reciting a few definitions

of the word "fly":

catwalk, flag part, tent flap, shoe tongue.
