Long Marriage, The

American Poetry Review, The, Mar/Apr 2008 by Nurkse, D

I love my life, she says,

but really I would like to be elsewhere.

I love the pull of the dog's leash

and the air between us when we sleep.

I am amazed how decisions

are made in dreams, with an absent mind,

and last forever. I just like elsewhere better.

I would take you with me if I could.

2

It is snowing, as always in that window,

and the old dog, gray-muzzled,

listens with his head on his paws,

breathing hard in sleep.
