$3.8 million settlement

Off Our Backs, Mar 2000

In one of the largest settlements ever with the Labor Department's Office of Federal Contract Compliance, Ford Motor Company has agreed to pay $3.8 million in compensation to women and minority employees who were discriminated against in hiring and promotion at seven of Ford's plants.

As part of the settlement, Ford will pay women and minority applicants for lost wages for entry-level assembly positions who were denied positions based on gender or race, and will hire 100 of those applicants for assembly jobs. Ford has also agreed to increase hiring of women and minorities at all its plants and facilities.

$2 million of the money will be used to compensate 318 qualified women applicants who were denied positions at the Kentucky Truck Plant in 1993.
