Jordan: Woman attacks harassers

Off Our Backs, Nov/Dec 2002

AMMAN-In Amman last month, a Jordanian woman fought back against three men who were verbally attacking her, punching and kicking them to the ground. Witnesses say the woman must have had martial arts training.

Initially, the men were too shocked to react, and simply screamed in pain, but then they scrambled up from the ground and fled. The woman quoted the title of a song made famous by the late Egyptian singer Umm Kalthoum, "patience has its limits," before continuing on amidst the cheers of the crowd.

Witnesses say that the three men verbally harassed this woman regularly. It is not clear if they harassed other women as well.
