Women's land

Off Our Backs, May/Jun 2003 by Corinne, Tee A

The dream of living lower on the consumer scale rather than high on it unites and inspires this particular group of women-recycling, exchanging skills, bartering, loving the earth, moving with the rhythms of the seasons, these are ongoing values. New women, not always young, continue to search out sites where these values are honored.

Although the populations on women's lands have fluctuated for economic and ideological reasons, only Cabbage Lane of the major communal lands of the 1970s is currently without residents, and repairs are underway to restore its buildings and make its road accessable again. Golden Wimmins' Land was lost to women through financial difficulties. WomanShare Owl Farm, Rainbow's End, Rainbow's Other End, Fishpond, Rootworks, Steppingwoods, and others survive and, most of the time, thrive.
