Pakistan: girls' schools burned

Off Our Backs, Mar/Apr 2004 by Douglas, Carol Anne, Musumeci, Rena, Bunyan, Chris, Young, Angie

CHILAS-Three people have been arrested for torching a school building in the remote village of Akhrot in Pakistan's northern region, the ninth school destroyed in five days. Eight of the nine schools destroyed in this spree were all-girls schools.

Non-governmental organizations with international assistance were mainly responsible for building the schools.

Some are blaming Islamic extremists opposed to women's education for this action, while others believe this was part of a general protest of the construction of community schools with non-Islamic funds.
