Nexus Properties named 'Distinguished Corporation'

Mercer Business, Feb 01, 1997

Nexus Properties, winners of the Mercer County Chamber of Commerce's 1996 "Distinguished Corporation Award," is one of the most prolific real estate developers in the entire Mercer region.

Founded and directed by Sydney Sussman, an untiring civic activist, he is ably supported by his son, Jeffrey and daughter, Andrea Kotzker, and other family members, who are partners and stockholders in more than 50 real estate partnerships and corporations.

Sussman's business career began more than 40 years ago with the formation of Certified Steel Company. In the late 1970's, the Sussman organization began purchasing industrial and commercial sites in Trenton, which had been abandoned and left to deteriorate. The original focus of the organization was to upgrade these inner city sites, thereby improving the surrounding neighborhoods.

Today, through various partnerships and corporations, the Sussman family owns and manages more than 1.5 million square feet of commercial office and warehouse space. In addition, the company owns and operates a 1,600-car public car parking garage, an 1,800-car parking garage, and various surface lots adjacent to the Trenton Train Station.

Sussman is proud of the versatility of his operation, which functions under the Nexus Properties banner. The administrative arm provides management, construction, and development services to the various partnerships. The company also employs management, leasing accounting, maintenance and administrative personnel to handle all of the affiliates' activities. A Facilities Management Department provides 24-hour "on-call" response in the event of any emergency in all of the properties.

Sussman is a person who does not know how to stand still. His organization currently has three new projects under construction. The firm is developing a 149-unit subdivision of single family homes in Hamilton Township. Construction began in February 1994, and the project should sell out by mid-1997.

A 45,000 square foot medical office building is near completion for the Southern Ocean County Hospital in Manahawkin, N.J. Nexus also is developing 30 single family homes in Washington Township, which should be completed by next year.

The Nexus Properties story is a success story, which has been built and developed against many odds under the direction of its determined founder. Many sections of the City of Trenton have been brought back to life through the efforts of Syd Sussman, and his devoted family. They more than deserve to receive the Chamber's Distinguished Corporation prize.
