MCCC: Noncredit Business Programs Foster Career Options, Career Growth

Mercer Business, Mar 01, 2006

This spring, Mercer County Community College's Center for Continuing Studies is again providing a dynamic response to workforce educational needs with a wide array of certificate programs and shortterm noncredit courses. Most classes are held at Mercer's spacious West Windsor Campus, at 1200 Old Trenton Road.

Since the inception of its noncredit unit in 1979, Mercer County CommunityCollege has helped thousands of county residents enhance their job skills and prepare for new careers. The college sends its noncredit course bulletins to county residents three times each year, but courses begin at varied times each month, mostly in the evening or on weekends to accommodate the schedules of working adults. While some classes are multi-session, others meet for one or two full-day sessions.

The college offers certificate programs in business specialties such as Human Resource Management, Property Management, Nonprofit Leadership and Management, Payroll, Leadership Excellence, Management, Project Management, Small Business Management, and Construction Management.

Beginning this spring, Mercer will offer several options in the booming real estate field, including "Contract Law and leases," which meets Monday evenings from March 13 to April 17. "Leadership Skills and Delegation Methods" meets on six Wednesday evenings beginning March 15. A Saturday afternoon class on April 22 in "Real Estate Math" helps prepare participants for the state exam. "How to Conduct a Home Inspection" is a four-session evening course from May 2-11.

To help prepare participants for certification exams as a "Professional in Human Resources" or a "Senior Professional in Human Resources," Mercer works in conjunction with the American Management Association. Course offerings include "Fair, Square and Legal: A Manager's Guide to Safe Hiring, Managing and Firing Practices," held Monday evenings from April 24 to May 26.

Mercer has also teamed up with the American Management Association for other certificate programs, and with the American Payroll Association to offer training for payroll professionals. Multiple courses in sales and marketing, business communications, small business management, and nonprofit leadership and management are also scheduled.

The center provides specialized training in computer programming, continuing education for teachers, and preparation for numerous certification exams.
