Strategic visioning series

Journal of Business Logistics, 1998 by Bowersox, Donald J

It is with great pleasure that the first two articles in the Strategic Visioning Series are presented. The visioning series consists of invited articles solicited from acknowledged leaders in logistics. Each recipient of the Council of Logistics Management's Distinguished Service Award was asked to participate in the series. To date, eleven of the recipients have agreed to share their visions concerning future logistics challenges and the implications for professional managers.

The first two articles in the visioning series focus on the common theme of leadership. Mr. Clifford Lynch provides a brief history of the development of modern logistics. He highlights the challenges facing a logistics leader "want-to-be." Similar challenges are highlighted by Joseph Andraski. Joe frames the leadership challenge in terms of facilitating supply chain collaboration. In combination, these two visions provide leadership concerning how to improve the quality of logistical management. They stress that good things just don't just happen without the vision, drive and commitment of a leader. Fostering improved leadership skills may well be the number one challenge facing logistical management.
