This month in M&A

Global Finance, Feb 1999

In this issue Global Finance concentrates on deals. With our cover we've named the $40.5 billion merger between Daimler-Benz and Chrysler The Deal of the Year, noting that it could set the standard for cross-border mergers for years to come. In "The Best Mergers of the Year," we pick five other transactions of 1998 as noteworthy. Some set off seismic industry shocks (such as the British PetroleumAmoco pairing) while others were named for the creativity of their financings (AT&T-TeleCommunications).

In the M&A section that follows, Benchmarks provides a snapshot of mergers and acquisitions in December. The Industry Focus is a new department; this month Global Finance dissects the entertainment world through the lens of M&A. In particular, we learn how Alejandro Soberon, of CIE (photo, above), has taken the vertical integration model across borders. Finally, in "Surviving Flowback," we focus on an issue of increasing importance as cross-border mergers proliferate.
