Invention saves time, money, backs

CNY Business Journal (1996+), Feb 19, 1999 by Muscatello, Laura

GLOVERSVILLE--David Spannbauer, of Gloversville, has earned a new title: inventor. After years of back-breaking labor laying bridge-decking membrane by hand, the New York State Department of Trans-portation bridge-repair mechanic was inspired to develop the Membrane Dispensing Cart.

This simple device has made it possible for two men to easily perform, in one-third the amount of time, a job that previously required five or six men. In addition to saving time and labor, the cart also improves the quality of the job, according to Spannbauer. Most importantly, Spannbauer's invention will prevent back injuries. Laying bridge-decking membrane by hand requires the workers to spend most of their time bent over in vulnerable positions that increase the chances of back injuries. The Membrane Dispensing Cart will eliminate that.

Engineers are impressed with the simplicity of the multi-faceted product. Functional and structural details are not yet available to the public. Spannbauer does guarantee the minimal cost of his invention cannot compare to the money construction companies will save from fewer workers'-compensation and disability cases.

He is hoping to have the cart in full production and available in the very near future. Spannbauer's original idea is ready for licensing to manufacturers interested in new-product development.

Steve Cuba, of Inventions Technology, Coral Gables, Fla., who is handling the publicity and public relations for Spannbauer, says his company is thrilled to be working with such an innovative product. "It's inexpensive to manufacture, well constructed, and will benefit people and their quality of work."
