AppliedTheory launches co-location partnership with AT&T

CNY Business Journal (1996+), Nov 05, 1999 by Hubbard, Kim L

GREAT NECK - AppliedTheory Corporation, a provider of end-to-end Internet solutions, has announced that it will be extending its network and offering access service via 10 new point-of-presence (PoP) locations in Boston, Mass.; Newark, N.Y.; Trenton, N.J.; Philadelphia, Pa.; Baltimore, Md.; Washington, D.C.; Atlanta, Ga.; and Stamford, Hartford, and New Haven, Conn. It will do so via a partnership with AT&T.

Each of AppliedTheory's 10 new sites is in a city where AT&T has full operating facilities. AppliedTheory is installing its own equipment in AT&T facilities, to accommodate the expanded service. Access service will be fully launched in these new territories in November. This marks AppliedTheory's first co-location partnership with AT&T, which will be providing local loop services and transport in selected areas.

"By partnering with AT&T on this portion of our network, we open the door for future development of our network nationally," says President & COO of AppliedTheory Lawrence Helft. "Presently, we offer a wide range of Web hosting, security, and enterprise-solution services in these new markets. By expanding our network and offering access services through the new PoPs," he adds, "we fulfill a critical component of our 'end-to-end' Internet solutions strategy for our customers, while increasing our national footprint."

All AppliedTheory fractional and full T1 and T3 (bandwidth capacity cabling) leased-line access services include a comprehensive set of standard features, including 24-hour-aday, seven-days-a-week service and support, complete DNS (Domain Name Server) services, and end-to-end implementation management and on-line network utilization statistics. Customers may also select from a choice of Customer Provided Equipment (CPE) solutions, including a fully managed service.

Additionally, AppliedTheory's "burstable" T3 access service provides customers with dedicated, point-to-point, unshared T3 access to the Internet without the cost associated with a full T3 connection. As a result, the "burstable" T3 cable allows customers to pay only for the bandwidth they need, and their charges will more closely reflect their actual usage.

The new PoPs come on the heels of AppliedTheory's recent expansion of its network operations facilities in Syracuse, development of a redundant network operations center in Columbia, Md., and the planned opening of a new Data Center in Hayward, Calif. All are components in a broader national expansion of AppliedTheory's products and services into new markets. All new facilities are expected to be fully operational by the end of 1999.
