Small Business Journalist of the Year: Patrick J. Doyle Director of the Greater Binghamton Coalition Nominated by Douglas L. Boyce, regional director of Small Business Development Center in Binghamton

Patrick Doyle is director of the Greater Binghamton Coalition, a public-private partnership working to improve the economy and quality of life in the Southern Tier of New York State. He also serves as executive director of Broome-Tioga Works, a regional work force development initiative helping business find workers and workers find jobs.

Doyle writes a weekly column in the "Careerbuilder Weekly" section of the Binghamton Press and Sun Bulletin. He has used this forum and his professional expertise to increase public understanding of the importance of small business in his community; to communicate important information to anyone thinking about starting a small business, to existing small-business owners, to encourage people to start their own business, and to help people who have lost their jobs to make successful career transitions.

Doyle also uses this forum to write feature articles on assistance available through U. S. Small Business Administration, SBDC, and SCORE. He is often quoted in print and electronic media, and is a reliable resource for journalists doing stories on small businesses.

He takes a proactive approach to reporting small-business information. He has originated and promoted business start-up seminars and has helped to bring together the major players from his area to develop a more cohesive program for introducing people to the challenges of owning and operating their own business. Doyle also works individually with a regular clientele of people going through the process of starting up a business.
