Crouse Hospital offering digital mammography

CNY Business Journal (1996+), Oct 19, 2007

SYRACUSE - Crouse Hospital is now offering digital mammography, the latest technology in the fight against breast cancer. Digital mammography produces computerized digital imaging of the breast that provides a much clearer picture than traditional film mammography, the hospital says.

One of the most important benefits of digital mammography is that it detects cancer earlier than film mammography, particularly in women under 50, those with dense breast tissue, and women entering menopause, according to Crouse. Early detection means a better chance of survival. An important feature of digital mammography is that it allows the physician to manipulate the image to see specific areas of interest more clearly. The physician can adjust the brightness, change contrast, and zoom in for close-ups. Also, digital mammography decreases radiation exposure by up to 50 percent over film mammography, Crouse says.

"We are very excited to bring this technology to Crouse Hospital," said radiologist Stephen Montgomery, M.D., medical director of the Crouse Breast Health Center. "Early detection is a key in the fight against breast cancer and digital mammography is the best weapon for it. It provides high-quality images of the smallest abnormalities."
