beginning of Web-only publishing, The

Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine,  Dec 2002  by McClatchey, Kenneth D

The Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine will begin publishing select accepted articles only on the Internet beginning with the January 2003 issue. This "Web-only" feature is free to all authors and available to visitors of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Web site (www.cap.org).

Because of the popularity of such journal sections as the Residents' Pages and Images in Pathology, as well as the number of quality case reports we receive, we currently have a large number of accepted papers for each of these sections. Our new Webonly publishing program will allow for more rapid publication of papers from these sections. In the future, this program will also allow the ARCHIVES to publish videos and other electronic materials that could not appear in our print version.

Rest assured that papers that appear only on the CAP Web site will be held to the same high standards that all ARCHIVES submissions are held to. Specifically, Web-only papers will be subject to the same rigorous peer-review process as papers that appear in our print version. All Webonly papers will be listed in the corresponding print version's table of contents. Most important, Web-only papers will be indexed in Medline, so they can be cited in all manuscripts. The Web-only papers will be available indefinitely on the CAP Web site.

Our Web-only papers will be issued an electronic page number that will consist of a lowercase "e" and the appropriate Web-only page number. This page assignment procedure will allow for easy identification of our Web-only papers and is identical to that used by such journals as the New England Journal of Medicine.

Next month's issue will feature a revised Instructions for Authors; I encourage all authors to review these revised instructions. The revised instructions will include a note informing authors that if they submit a case report or a paper to the Residents' Pages or Images in Pathology sections, the submission will be published Web-only at the discretion of the editorial office. The editorial office will contact the corresponding author of each Web-only publication via e-mail to make the author aware of the office's decision and to provide the CAP Web site address.

We welcome your comments regarding our exciting new Web-only program. The e-mail address for the ARCHIVES editorial office remains archive path@lumc.edu. With our continued rapid growth, especially among our international audiences, Web-only publication will allow us to further improve our publication turnaround times.

In addition, our printer, Allen Press, has recently begun sending page proofs electronically to authors as page description format (PDF) files. Authors who receive PDF proofs may review their articles directly on their computer screens or print out a hard copy. If you visit the CAP Web site, you will notice that each month's issue of the ARCHIVES is available in a PDF format. When you open one of these files, the page appears on your screen exactly as it appears in the printed journal. I fully expect that this PDF proof program, which will initially begin on a limited basis, will further speed up our publication process.

I look forward to receiving your submissions in the coming year.
