Electrical Principles and Practices. Second edition. By Glen Mazur and Peter Zurlis. American Technical Publishers, Inc., 1155 W. 175th St., Homewood, Ill. 60430-4600; (800) 323-3471. $74.00 (hardbound). 504 pages.
Ideal for newcomers to electrical technology, with addition of an introductory chapter on "Electricity Principles" dealing with the structure of matter and production of electrical energy, this comprehensive volume can also be useful to electricians and technicians involved in practical electrical work.
Intended for individual or group training in either an academic, shop, or self-study environment, the book's 24 clearly written and profusely illustrated chapters deal with basic arithmetic and units, meters and measurements, conductors, circuits, and circuit properties, transformers and motors, fluid power and air systems, and electronics. Scattered throughout are brief, highlighted "Tech Tips" and "Tech Facts."
One chapter covers the multitude of abbreviations, symbols, and acronyms that pervade modern technology. Another explains audio systems, from microphones to CD players. Following a 17-page Appendix including metric unit and horsepower/torque conversions, formulae for voltage drop and horsepower, energy units, and other useful references, an extensive glossary defines several hundred terms from accumulator to zener diode.
Included with the textbook is a CD-ROM containing "quick quizzes," an illustrated glossary, formulae, animated graphics, and other reference material. For use with the text, a 188-page student workbook, available separately for $21.00, includes for each chapter a set of review questions, followed by worksheets containing extensive examples. An answer key is available for $7.00.-RLN
