MEASURING EQUIPMENT

Accuracy better than 0.3% is claimed for measurement of inductance, capacitance, resistance, and impedance using the Model Z-8200 LCR meter from Protek Test & Measurement, 40 Boroline Rd., Allendale, N.J. 07401; (201) 760-9898. Test frequencies are 100, 120, and 1,000 Hz. Features include built-in comparator with four-bin sorting capability, series and parallel equivalent circuit modes, auto ranging with data hold, open and short circuit calibration, and pass/fail binning alarm. Measurement ranges are 1,000 ohms to 999.99 megohms for R/Z; 1 microhenry to 999.99 Henries for L; i pF to 999.99 microF for capacitance.

CONTROLS

The SEL-451 substation relay combines as many as 10 separate functions of automation, control, and protection. Features include six PT and six CT inputs, phasor measurement functions, and communication via SCADA Ethernet connections. Unit monitors power including thermal or rolling interval demand on positive-, negative-, and zero-sequence current, as well as single- or three-phase megawatts, megavars, mVA, and harmonics. Request more information from Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, 2350 NE Hopkins Court, Pullman, Wash. 99163; (509) 332-1890.

TEST INSTRUMENTS

For troubleshooting residential and small commercial electrical systems, the Model 325 true RMS a-c/d-c power clamp meter is offered by B&K Precision Corp., 22820 Savi Ranch Pkwy., Yorba Linda, Calif. 92887; (714) 921-9095. The Model 325 exceeds IEC 1010-1 safety standards in measurement of power up to 400 kW, 600 V a-c or d-c, 400 A a-c, 4,000 ohms resistance, and 40 ohms audible continuity. Features include data hold, 3fl-digit LCD display, auto ranging, over-range and low battery indicators, and auto power off. Maximum jaw opening is 1.41''.

Intended for basic troubleshooting by electricians, the Split-Jaw Smart-Meter is a pocket-sized clamp meter with CAT IV 600 V safety rating, featuring pushbutton data hold, auto power off, and low-battery indicator. It measures a-c voltage to 750, d-c to 1,000, alternating current to 200 A, and resistance to 2,000 ohms. Continuity testing uses an audible beeper. Rigid open jaw accommodates hard-to-reach, large bundled cables. For more details, contact Ideal Industries, Inc., Becker Place, Sycamore, Ill. 60178; (800) 435-0705.

The Model 5070 fully automated graphical megohmmeter provides three step voltage profiles, 40 to 5100 volts, each containing up to five steps. Providing insulation resistance measurements to 10,000 Gohm, plus dielectric absorption, PI, capacitance, leakage current, and programmable temperature correction, the unit also features RS-232 interface and extensive memory function, plus Dataview software for data storage, analysis, and report generation. For further information, contact AEMC Instruments, 200 Foxborough Blvd., Foxborough, Mass. 02035-2872; (508) 698-2115.

The 87V digital multimeter for "noisy" equipment measures voltage and frequency on adjustable-speed drive systems that create electrical noise troubling to most DMM's. Featuring a bright white backlight, magnetic hanger, and built-in thermometer, the 87V is rated for 600 V CAT IV and 1,000 V CAT III environments and will withstand 8 kV voltage spikes. Further details are available from Fluke Corp., P.O. Box 9090, Everett, Wash. 98206; (888) 308-5277.

A dual wavelength fiber optic cable tester is offered by Megger, 4271 Bronze Way, Dallas, Tex. 75237-1017; 9800) 723-2861. The XC-8513 OTDR is capable of simplex or duplex multi-mode testing by a LAN installer to determine cause and location of a lost fiber segment. Instrument stores as a tagged pair the results of measurements on both transmit and receive fibers of a duplex cable. Both fiber traces can be viewed as an overlay on the instrument's display.

POWER TRANSMISSION

"Orange Peel" Type MCG plastic coupling guards for indoor or outdoor use are available from Falk Corp., P.O. Box 492, Milwaukee, Wis. 53201; (414) 937-4359. Featuring symmetrical halves injection molded from polyethylene, guards are hinged together at the top, needing only to be trimmed to length and attached to machine foundation with two fasteners. Optional end caps enclose shaft extension openings when required.

ENCLOSURES

Available for either 115 or 230 V a-c supply, a six-inch cooling fan for electronic enclosures provides 300 cfm airflow, in either a 6.7''×5.9''×2'' or 6.7'' round frame. Capacitor motor features dual ball bearings. For more information, contact Orion Fans, 10557 Metric Dr., Dallas, Texas 75243; (800) 323-2439.
