Budget Reductions. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the dean of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's engineering school, William D. Gregory, will step down in June after five years of budget reductions and only modest progress in advancing the University of WisconsinMilwaukee's commercial research.
Gregory will keep his faculty position at the engineering school, where he is a tenured professor, and devote more of his time to his own start-up company, NovaScan, whose objective is to develop technology to improve detection and diagnosis of breast cancer.
Appointments. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute announced the appointment of Alan Cramb, Ph.D., as dean of the School of Engineering, and the John A. Clark and Edward T. Crossan Professor of Engineering. Cramb is professor and head of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. His career spans both industry and academia.
Electrical Engineering Online. Villanova University's College of Engineering has announced that it will offer a master's degree in electrical engineering online. Starting this fall, the program will allow candidates to earn a full degree (MSEE), or three certificates in high-frequency systems, wireless, and digital communications or communication systems. In other electrical engineering news: According to Power Engineering News, a study by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers found that power engineer graduates numbered 2,000 in the 1980's but only 500 today.
Many college-level electrical engineering programs have been abandoned over the years.
