Harold L. Chase, former president of Giles Armature and Electric Works
Harold L. Chase of Marion, Ill., former president of Giles Armature and Electric Works, died Jan. 17. He was 89.
At age 16, Mr. Chase went to work for Giles Armature and Electric Works as a janitor. He went on to become president of the company before it was sold to Flanders Electric Motor Service, Inc., in 1985.
Mr. Chase remained active in his church and community. He attended Aldersgate United Methodist Church, where he was a member for 73 years, and served in almost every office. In 1959 he established the Homebuilders Sunday School class and served as a delegate to the Church Annual Conference for more than 20 years. Mr. Chase sang in the Men's Quartet and the choir. He was also a member of the Gideon Society.
Mr. Chase stayed active with the Boy Scouts of America for 75 years and served as president of the Egyptian Council, a southern Illinois Boy Scout council, and received the organization's Silver Beaver award.
A member of the Marion Rotary Club, Mr. Chase received the club's highest award, the Paul Harris Fellow. He was president of the Marion Chamber of Commerce. For several years, he served as a member of the Marion Unit 2 school board and as a member of the Bank of Marion board.
Mr. Chase was preceded in death by his wife Geneva, who died Jan. 5 at the age of 89.
Survivors include: his son, Jeff Chase and his wife, Nancie; four daughters, Sara Nielsen and husband, Bill; Nancy Duddy and husband, Hugh; Alice Seavers and husband, Kent; Julie Anna Chase; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; his brother and sister-in-law, James F. and Glenda Muir; and several nieces and nephews.
