Keane nominated Army vice chief

A former Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg commander has been selected to serve as Army vice chief of staff.

Pending Senate confirmation, Lt. Gen. Jack Keane will be promoted to general, replacing the current vice chief, Gen. Eric K. Shinseki, who has been named the new Army chief of staff.

The Army vice chief's duties include supervision of the Army staff in addition to serving as Army senior leader for the Joint Requirements Oversight Council.

Keane will also chair the Army Space Council, the Reserve Component Coordination Council and the Army Reserve Action Plan General Officer Steering Committee.

Keane has commanded the 101st Airborne Division, lOth Mountain Division and 82nd Airborne Division. He also was commanding general for the XVIII Airborne Corps, which deployed under his command to Bosnia, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Haiti.

Keane has been commanding troops since 1979.
