House approves bill to protect educational benefits for deployed

National Guard, Dec 2001

Guardsmen and Reservists called to active duty in the war on terrorism will not lose education benefits accrued from prior military service under legislation passed by the House

Nov. 14. The bill, H.R. 3240, the Reservists Education Protection Act was sponsored by Rep. Chris Smith, R-NJ., chairman of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs; and the committee's ranking Democrat, Rep. Lane Evans, D-Ill.

The Smith-Evans legislation would allow service members to regain any monthly educational payments lost due to call-ups by extending the number of months of entitlements commensurately. In addition, the legislation would add the length of their active duty tour plus four months to the 10 years normally provided to use educational benefits under the Montgomery GI Bill program.
