Institute of Transportation Engineers. ITE Journal, Aug 2002
A national survey was undertaken to assess the use of helmets by cyclists of all ages in New Zealand. From April to early May 2002 more than 5,400 cyclists of primary and intermediate school age, secondary school age and adults were observed at 58 sites across the country. The results indicate a national cycle helmet-wearing rate across all age groups at 89 percent, a decrease compared to recent years.
In 2001 the rate was 93 percent and from 1998 to 2000 the rate was 95 percent. The rates are also broken down by regions and police districts. To view more information about the survey results, go to www.itsa.govt.nz/ research/helmets.html.
