Several ITE colleagues passed away recently. We recognize them for their contributions to ITE and the profession, and we send condolences to their families.
Dr. Donald S. Berry, (FL), died on December 16, 2002 in Kenosha, WI, USA. Dr. Berry was born on January 1, 1911 near Vale, SD, USA. He graduated from the South Dakota School of Mines in 1931. He received his M.S. from Iowa State in 1933 and his Ph.D. in transportation engineering from the University of Michigan in 1936.
Dr. Berry devoted his professional career to education and research in traffic and transportation engineering. After 12 years as a transportation engineer and, later, director of the traffic division at the National Safety Council in Chicago, IL, USA, he became a professor and helped organize graduate programs in transportation engineering at the University of California at Berkeley, Purdue University and Northwestern University. He served as chairman of the department of civil engineering at Northwestern from 1962 to 1968. Dr. Berry was active in several committees of the Highway Research Board and ITE. He directed in-service training programs in traffic and transportation engineering in many parts of the United States and in several foreign countries. In addition, he published more than 100 papers on subjects including intersection delay and capacity and exit ramps.
Dr. Berry received many honors and awards in his lifetime. In 1966, he was the first transportation educator to be selected as a member of the National Academy of Engineering. He was given the Sesquicentennial Award from the University of Michigan in 1967 and also has been the Walter P Murphy professor chair at Northwestern since 1967. In 1972, he was given the Theodore M. Matson Memorial Award Citation by ITE. In 1992, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the transportation division of the Illinois Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
The Donald S. Berry Memorial Fund has been established to assist students of transportation engineering at Northwestern University in attending the Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board in Washington, DC, USA. Contributions to the fund may be sent to the Donald S. Berry Memorial Fund, c/o Chairman, Department of Civil Engineering, Northwestern University, 60208, USA. Checks should be payable to Northwestern University.
Gustov A. Byrom, PE. (FL), of Miami, FL, USA, passed away on November 30, 2002.
William A. Kruger, RE. (ML), of St. Louis, MO, USA, died recently.
James B. Cooley, (ML), of Graceville, FL, USA, died recently.
