UNITED KINGDOM: NEW HOV LANES UNDER TRIAL

Institute of Transportation Engineers. ITE Journal, Feb 2005

In an effort to reduce congestion and improve system reliability, U.K. Transport secretary Alistair Darling has announced a trial of new high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes to encourage carpooling on the Ml motorway between Junctions 7 and 10. In late 2005, the lanes on that stretch of the Ml will be widened.

It is estimated that the new dedicated lanes will assist in decreasing cars on the road by 5 percent. If the strategy proves successful, the government will consider extending the dedicated lanes to Junction 17. For additional information, visit www.dft.gov. uk/pns/DisplayPN.cgi?pn_id=2004_0158.
