Institute of Transportation Engineers. ITE Journal, Jun 2005

The Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) has announced irs sponsorship of research on distractions that affect novice drivers. IBC and researchers at the University of Calgary will conduct a study to determine the effects of cell phone use on the driving behavior of novice drivers. The information will be used to provide recommendations to governments' consideration of changes to graduated licensing requirements.

The survey will compare the performance of 20 novice drivers (up to 21 years old with less than 60 hours of driving experience) to a group of 20 experienced drivers (minimum of 500,000 kilometers of driving experience). The study will be conducted in two phases-a simulator phase and an on-road phase. The study is expected to be conducted from May to August 2005.
