and British navies. Bruce and Cogar provide an up-to-date and informative reference that covers the oared galleys of several centuries ago to today's nuclear-powered submarines to illustrate the evolution of warships and weapons as well as strategy, tactics, and organization. The design of the book is elegant and layout is user-friendly. Bruce has written numerous books of military history and two bibliographies of British military history. Cogar, director of the U.S. Naval Academy Museum and a professor of naval history at the Academy, is the author of a multivolume dictionary of American admirals. With synoptic index, index, and numerous black-and-white photographs.
