THE U.S. NAVY IN WORLD WAR I: Combat at Sea and in the Air, by A.B. Feuer. Westport, Conn.: Praeger Pubushers, 1999. 224 pp. $55.00. [Phone: (800) 225-5800] In 1917 most U.S. politicians and much of the nation's press were calling for a large and strong Army, but relatively few recognized the equally important need for a large and modern Navy. Despite its modest size, the U.S. Navy successfully convoyed hundreds of thousands of soldiers to France, while contending with the new and lethal threat posed by German U-Boats. Feuer gathered personal accounts in the forms of personal diaries, letters, and photographs of the men who served at sea and in the fledgling Naval Air Service, as well as the captains of industry who made victory possible. He covers such topics as the industrial innovations by Ford, Eastman Kodak, and General Electric that greatly contributed to the Allied cause; the U.S. Navy's first flying ace; and the innovative use of aerial photo reconnaissance and balloons. With bibliography, index, nine maps, and 20 black-and-white photographs.
