BRIEFING: Twenty-nine civilian oceanographic research ships are utilized for oceanographic research as part of the University National Oceanographic UNOLS Laboratory System (UNOLS) fleet. While ownership of the vessels varies from the Navy to the National Science Foundation (NSF) to the universities, all of the vessels are operated by universities or research institutions.
