Enduring freedom update

Sea Power, Jun 2002

In late April, the USS John F. Kennedy Battle Group became the only U.S. Navy carrier battle group (CVBG) in the Middle East following the departure for home of the USS John C. Stennis CVBG.

The Cyclone-class coastal patrol ship (PC) USS Firebolt-the first PC to deploy in direct support of homeland defense-also returned to its homeport, Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek in Norfolk, Va., in early April. During her deployment, the Firebolt logged 13,000 miles underway in coastal operations covering the U.S. littorals from Boston, Mass., to Ingleside, Texas.

A naval construction task force-including Navy Seabees and a Marine Corps protective force-has been deployed on board the Whidbey Island-class dock landing ship USS Germantown to Basilan Island in the Philippines to build facilities in support of Filipino military operations against the Abu Sayeff terrorist group.

The number of sea-service reservists called up for Operations Enduring Freedom and Noble Eagle also has declined; as of 15 May the totals were 9,170 Navy, 4,298 Marine Corps, and 1,724 Coast Guard Reservists.
