Greece military to reduce overall command structure

Sea Power, Oct 2003

In early August 2003, the Greek Ministry of Defense began restructuring its current military to reduce the overall command structure and cut personnel from 3,000 to around 800. The new organization, which grew out of the country's 2000 strategic defense review, was approved on July 30.

Under the plan, all three services (army, navy, and air force) will transfer their operational responsibilities to the Hellenic National Defense General Staff, which is the new joint operational headquarters. In addition, the general staffs of all three services will adopt a common command structure and organization, with each having four branches: operations, manpower, logistics, and defense planning.
