SPECIAL OPERATIONS & UNDERSEA WARFARE

Sea Power, Feb 2005

The recent conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the ongoing global war on terrorism, are marking a turning point for special operations forces of all the services as they take a leading role in counterterrorist missions and direct military action.

Marine Corps' Special Operations Training Groups are providing unique training for the predeployment of Marine Expeditionary Units with special operations capabilities. Meanwhile, U.S. Navy SEALs (Sea, Air and Land) are bolstering their forces and expanding their missions in response to Pentagon requirements for more diverse special operations capabilities across the board.

New technologies to support special operations are coming online. The Advanced SEAL Delivery System (ASDS) continues to show promise, and the Navy and Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency have launched a project called Tango Bravo to inspire new designs for submarines that would be launched far into the future.
