Fassmer Design Selected For Chile OPV Program

Sea Power, Aug 2005

The Chilean government signed an estimated $50 million contract May 20 with Germany's Fassmer GmbH & Co. and Chile's Astilleros y Maestranzas de la Armada (ASMAR) for the construction of two Fassmer 80-meter offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) for the Chilean Coast Guard.

Dubbed the Danubio IV OPV Program, the contract is for the design and construction of the first two units of the class, with commissioning expected in 2008 and 2009. Fassmer will provide the design and construction assistance for the vessels being built at ASMAR's Talcahuano Yard.

Two additional units also are planned by the Chilean Coast Guard, with a construction contract expected in 2007 and construction beginning on unit three in 2008 following the commissioning of the first unit. The third and fourth units currently are scheduled for commissioning in 2010 and 2011.

The 80-meter OPV is designed with two Wartsila 12 V6 diesel engines for a maximum speed of 21 knots and a range of 8,600 nautical miles. The design is capable of carrying a gun up to 76mm (although the Chilean variant will have a 40mm gun) and has a helicopter platform for one helicopter. The new OPV will also carry two 7-meter service boats.
