Summer is in full swing. Ask anyone assigned to or transiting the CENTCOM AOR. Daily temperatures well above 100° F are standard fare (although Manas is looking awfully nice about now). But for everyone in the northern hemisphere, heat and solar precautions are advised. This issue highlights those precautions for both aircrews and the rest of us on the ground.

Summer brings another danger: historically, June, July, and August are the most dangerous months for Air Force personnel and their families. School is out, vacations are in, the weather is great, and fun is the order of the day. Logically, this is the best time to emphasize risk management, both on the job and personal. For any sport, preparing for a tough opponent includes a concentration on basic skills (execution) and a strong game plan (strategy). Please think of this summer as your tough opponent. Good execution can include motor vehicle checkups, sunscreen, patient driving, etc. Good strategy can include conservative travel plans, separating party plans from boating plans, etc. The combination of good execution and good strategy should not interfere with enjoying the summer and will help you avoid being the subject of a mishap investigation.

Let's be safe out there, and thanks for reading.
