Danish Population History 1600-1939
By Hans Chr. Johansen
University Press of Southern Denmark, Odense, Denmark, 2002
245 pages, hardcover $33
This book claims to be the first comprehensive account of the country's population development in the centuries covered. Based on both macrosources and a multitude of computerized microsources and by using advanced demographic methods, the author gained insight into the development of nuptuality, fertility and mortality. He analyzed his results against a background of economic and social changes in Danish society. He found that they demonstrate an early decline in mortality from about 1775 and a high level of fertility until the very late 19th century.
