Selbstredend selbzweit selbdritt: Serpentine Selves in the Poetry of Roza Domascyna

ask not why and wherefore

a language ends

every language perishes with a person

yet in imitating him you let him

be resurrected in your person

"Hutschko soj," according to the notes in the volume, is neither German nor Sorbian, but is an incantation that makes young geese yawn. Geese are often associated with the world of women, and also with vigilance. Here, the geese are made silent by the incantation, just as the language of the narrator is silenced. Although the poem deals with the death rattle of the Sorbian language, it is hopeful in tone, suggesting that the geological strata of the language will always be there in whomever takes up its elements, even if the last person to live in that language has died. One need not cling to the trappings of material culture, such as traditional costume, since the language and its history are present and will remain in the animals and in the land. On this land, the narrator finds some comfort for her isolation.

In selfsecond, the dual forms are rendered in German in inventive combinations and permutations of words. Words are "placed like nuts" (selfspeaking p. 41) for the reader to crack, as the poet puzzles over the space "between self and selfother" (p. 40). The poem "Under the double star" illustrates some of the attractions and repulsions of the dual, in what Domascyna terms "double-tongued duelity" (p. 46).

Unterm doppelstern

im zwieland mit doppelzungiger duellitat

wer null wer eins wer original wer kopie

im doppel die doppelverdiener mit doppelpaddel

und doppelposten vorm doppelhaus

gedoppt auf den doppelnelson und doppelte drehung

um die doppelachse im doppelauge doppelsalz

dumpeln zum doppelpunkt:

vom doppeldecker springen

als doppeler doppeldeutigen doppelgangertums

doppelhochzeit machen die doppelehe durchhalten
