Industry: Email Alert RSS FeedSignal Analysis and Prediction
International Journal of Electrical Engineering Education, Oct 2000 by Allinson, N M
Arising from the First European Conference on Signal Analysis and Prediction, this collection of 35 selected papers covers a wide range of current research topics. Even reading the text some three years after the original meeting, quite a few of the chapters seem fresh and discuss problems at the cutting-edge of signal processing research. A few topics do tend to dominate - in particular wavelet transforms and speech coding. There are some references to even more fashionable approaches blind signal separation and the recent rediscovery of kernel methods (now with skewed and non-orthogonal kernels). Multi-authored books, especially ones originating from scientific meetings, can be something of a curate's egg and one with a short sell-by date. Either the editors have worked very hard or they were fortunate to possess a mine of worthwhile material, but this book is certainly much better than many others with a similar pedigree. Of course, there are never sufficient pages on the topics that really interest the individual reader but the positive aspect is that there is an opportunity to read a little on unknown topics. General uniformity of standard, and use of Latex, all contribute to a lasting and worthy addition to the researcher's bookshelf.
