Control Systems Engineering

International Journal of Electrical Engineering Education, Oct 2000 by Milanovic, Jovica

Norman S. Nise, Control Systems Engineering, 2nd edn, Intl Student edn. (Addison-Wesley, 1998, 853 pp., L26.50 pbk)

The book is well written and well suited to undergraduate students doing a first course in control system engineering. Important aspects of the basics of control system engineering are addressed and explained. System modelling in frequency and time domain, time responses, root locus technique, state-space representation, stability criteria, various methods of controller design and discrete systems are covered. The level used in the book is especially suitable for an introductory course in control system engineering and for all those who are planning to enter the area of control systems. Detailed and comprehensive explanations are given for all topics covered. The correlation between various parameters of the control system and the actual system behaviour is explained in physical and mathematical terms. The book contains a lot of examples, case studies from real-life control system applications and additional problems for practice. Solutions to some of the problems are also provided. The special value of the book is in using MATLAB in design and analysis. Various examples of MATLAB applications, together with short MATLAB codes, are given.
