James Sherwood Charlton died on April 29, 2002, in Atlanta. He received his B.S.E.E. with honors from the University of Arkansas, and an M.S.E.E. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of California at Berkeley. From 1973 to 1981, he was a research scientist at New York University, the Marine Biological Lab in Woods Hole, Mass., and the University of California Medical Center at San Francisco. In 1981, he became an associate professor of electrical engineering and graduate studies coordinator of electrical engineering at the University of Arkansas. Charlton served as a member of the graduate council and the faculty senate at the University of Arkansas.
