ASEE Prism, Sep 2005 by Grayson, R Larry, Saperstein, Lee W

Mining at Missouri-Rolla

We would like to compliment ASEE for its long-overdue article on mining engineering ("Making It Big," Prism, Summer 2005). You have shared with the engineering education community something that we have known for a lifetime: Mining engineering is both fun and vital.

Inasmuch as we at the University of Missouri-Rolla have a vigorous mining program with an enrollment to match-we expect soon to be No. 1 in enrollment and research output-and our students beat Virginia Tech and Colorado School of Mines to take first prize in the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association-sponsored design contest, we want to point out that our official campus name is University of Missouri-Rolla. UMR is a full-service engineering university with an engineering enrollment substantially larger than that found in Columbia, which is sometimes referred to as the University of Missouri.

We would not want prospective students or visitors to our Web sites to be confused, so they should use UMR as the identifier if they want to contact us.
