Clinton and the IBA

Northwestern Financial Review, Sep 26, 1998 by Bengtson, Tom

What is President Clinton trying to do to the Iowa Bankers Association? First, he scheduled his August 17 speech to conflict with the IBA's annual officer's dinner. That was the speech in which he admitted having an "inappropriate relationship" with Monica Lewinski.

Then his four-hour testimony before the grand jury was broadcast during the morning of the IBA's annual convention (Sept. 21). Iowa bankers had to choose between ABA Treasurer Harley Bergmeyer's Washington Update, and Clinton's testimony. (Tough choice!)

On top of that, the IBA convention was supposed to open Sept. 21 with an inspirational message from Anthony Campolo, the author of 26 books. He is associate pastor of the Mount Carmel Baptist Church in West Philadelphia and he has a weekly cable television show. Campolo cancelled his appearance at the convention when President Clinton called him to the White House to serve as his spiritual advisor.

(Look for complete coverage of the IBA convention in the Oct. 10 Northwestern Financial Review.)
