Site.basics: Frames

Northwestern Financial Review, Mar 15, 2001 by Parker, Lena

Frames consist of two (or more) Web pages being shown to the viewer at one time. If one part of a page moves independently of another part (with a scroll bar), then the site was created with frames. * Frames are wonderful if you want to create a frequently-updated navigational area that needs to be available on every page of your site. By updating the natigation page once, the entire site is updated. Frames also are wonderful if you want your visitor to always see your logo while clicking around the rest of the Web. * Frames are terrible if you or your visitors are using does not aknow how to use them properly (for common now), or if your visitor does not know how to use them properly (for printing, refreshing, or viewing). Also, if there are secure areas, the navigational fram needs to be secured too, otherwise the entire transaction is considered insecure.
