Robert M. Sierk, president of Firstar Bank of Iowa City, has been selected to receive the annual "Service to Mankind Award" presented by the University Sertoma Clubs of Iowa. The award was set to be presented at a banquet April 12.
Sierk, who also is president of the Iowa City Ronald McDonald House, has taken a leadership role in several community outreach programs. According to Olga Sassine, Service to Mankind committee chairperson, it has been Sierk's years of ongoing dedication to Iowa City and surrounding area that has made him deserving of the prestigious award.
"This community has been good to us," Sierk said, referring to his wife Bonnie and their four daughters. "I'm a very strong believer in giving back to the community. I think that's a responsibility each of us has. I'm fortunate to have had forty years of involvement in a wonderful community."
Sertoma International is a volunteer civic service organization with about 27,000 members. The Iowa City club is one of 830 clubs in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Its primary service project is helping the more than 42 million people with speech and hearing disorders.
The Service to Mankind award is the highest honor Sertoma bestows on a nonmember. Each club selects a winner, who then competes with winners from other clubs at district, regional and international levels.
