House approves legislation protecting confidentiality

The House Financial Services Committee has approved legislation that would more strongly protect the confidentiality of communications between financial institutions and regulators. Currently, examiner findings and other confidential information on banks may be made public in court cases if authorized by a judge.

Though some courts have imposed a high barrier for disclosure, financial services industry lobbyists have sought a national standard as lawsuits and requests for sensitive material have multiplied.
