ABA releases 2001 survey results

Northwestern Financial Review, Nov 1, 2001

Smaller banks are edging out larger financial institutions in terms of average revenue per customer, according to the 2001 retail banking survey conducted by the American Bankers Association.

Banks with less than $500 million in assets averaged $1,743 of profit per retail customer, while larger institutions drew only $945.

Larger institutions edged out smaller institutions in terms of return on assets, however, showing 1.55 percent and 1.37 percent, respectively.

For all banks, sales for life, accident and health, property and casualty, and credit insurance increased in 1999, the most recent year available, while sales of long-term care insurance remained steady.

Seventy-eight banks responded to the ABA survey.
