Most banks sponsor financial literacy

Northwestern Financial Review, May 1-May 14, 2002

A report released by the Consumer Bankers of America shows most banks sponsor financial literacy programs. The Washington-based group polled its members from January to March, getting responses from 68 banks and thrifts representing 60 percent of the industry's assets. The poll said 97 percent of the institutions surveyed support programs on banking basics as well as more advanced programs, including homeownership counseling.

Sixty percent said they try to warn customers about things like loan flipping and excessive interest rates. Eighty-seven percent said they sponsor financial-literacy programs at public schools.
