Proposal makes bankers responsible for federal housing appraisers

Northwestern Financial Review, Feb 15-Feb 28, 2003

The Department of Housing and Urban Development is proposing to make lenders responsible for ensuring that the appraisers they use for Federal Housing Administration loans work according to FHA guidelines. the proposal is intended to stem losses in the department's FHA insurance fund, which pays off lenders when borrowers default.

HUD said there are many ways lenders can determine whether an appraisal meets FHA guidelines, such as automated valuation models or reviews of appraisal documents and performance reviews.
