Obituary: Boyd Hopkins Sr.

Boyd B. Hopkins Sr. died June 23 at his home under hospice care.
He was born November 13, 1918 in Dalzell S. D., to Lucinda and David Hopkins. He married Hazel Campbell in 1943.
He ranched in Meade County in the western part of South Dakota from 1938 until 1947 in partnership with his father. He went to work at the bank in New Underwood, S.D., and then in Wall, S.D., as a teller and bookkeeper. In 1948, he was hired as an assistant cashier at Live Stock State Bank in Artesian. Hopkins purchased the bank from the L. A. Hollenbeck estate in 1961 where he served for 55 years.
In 1981, he married Sharyn Beauregard Long.
In 1962, the first Live Stock State Bank branch was opened in Letcher. The bank has grown to 23 branches in 16 communities. The bank changed its name to CorTrust Bank in 1993.
He was mayor of Artesian in 1950. He also served on the executive council and legislative council of the South Dakota Bankers Association, and was active in the Independent Community Bankers of America.
He was named as the Mitchell Stampede Rodeo Honored Pioneer in 1990. He was honored by the South Dakota Bankers Association in 1998 for 50 years in banking. In September of 1999, he was elected to the South Dakota Hall of Fame for his contribution to business and trade.
He is survived by his wife Sharyn, son Boyd D. (Dody) Sioux Falls, step children Ty Long, Lisa Mauszycki (Bill) and Laura Fosness (Chris), all of Mitchell; grandchildren, Jack Hopkins (Gina), Todd Hopkins (Maria), Matt, Katy and Mallory Mauszycki, Adam and Sam Fosness; great-grandchildren, McKinzie, Jerrod and Spencer Hopkins; Kailie Hopkins and Alana Hernandez.
