Northwestern Financial Review, Sep 15-Sep 30, 2003

Linda Stewart became president of North Milwaukee State Bank, Milwaukee, on August 11. With the appointment, Stewart becomes the first woman to lead North Milwaukee State Bank since its inception in 1971. Stewart comes to the $56 million bank from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where she was director of the Joint Center for Workforce Development.

"We want to take community growth through business development and I'll be very visible in doing so," Stewart said in a recent interview with Milwaukee's Business Journal.

The 55-year-old Stewart began her career in banking working in various positions at First Bank and the former First Wisconsin. She has been with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee since 2000. Prior to that, Stewart served as Gov. Tommy Thompson's cabinet secretary for Wisconsin's Department of Workforce Development.

Stewart has been a member of North Milwaukee State Bank's board of directors since 1990.

North Milwaukee State Bank is the oldest minority-owned bank in the city; the other is Legacy Bank, chartered in 1999.
