Attacks on bank computers increase

Northwestern Financial Review, Jul 1-Jul 14, 2004

More than 80 percent of technology managers at the world's 100 largest financial institutions said their computer systems had been compromised by hackers in the last year, according to a survey by consultant Deloitte Touche. In 40 percent of the cases, the unauthorized intrusions resulted in financial losses to the institutions.

In the 2003 survey, only 39 percent of the financial institutions report security attacks. Surprisingly, however, despite the increase in the incidents of hacking, many of the firms reported their IT security budgets had remained flat or declined.
